A beautifully made, contemporary bench in solid ash with a hand-woven rush seat, made in Northamptonshire by Summerfield + Scott.

The landscape around Summerfield + Scott’s workshop provides much of what they need: ash from the Boughton Estate and rush from the River Ise, both grown within a few short miles of where the bench is made.

Finished simply with linseed oil, the materials are allowed to do much of the talking: warm timber, natural rush and the small variations that come with making each piece individually.

A lower shelf adds useful storage, making it a hardworking piece for a hallway, bedroom or around the dining table.

8-12 weeks. Please get in touch should you have any urgent requirements and we will accomodate what we can.

British craftsmanship

Summerfield + Scott's workshop sits in the heart of what was once a thriving rush-working region. For centuries, rushes from the rivers and wetlands of Northamptonshire were harvested and woven into the chairs, baskets and matting used in homes across the county and beyond.

Today, Charlie and Flora Scott are bringing the material back into local furniture making. Rush is harvested by hand from the River Ise, less than a mile from their studio, and woven using traditional techniques to create furniture with a distinctly contemporary character.

Rooted in the landscape and traditions of the area, their work gives this centuries-old craft a new expression, reimagining rush furniture for a new generation of British homes.

  • Based in rural Northamptonshire, Flora and Charlie Scott restore antique and vintage furniture using traditional techniques and thoughtful repair.

    Through The Rush Project, they are helping to champion the heritage craft of rush weaving for a new generation. Their contemporary collection of handcrafted rush-seated furniture celebrates the beauty, practicality and sustainability of this centuries-old skill through pieces designed for modern living.

    • Wipe the ash frame with a soft, slightly damp cloth; avoid harsh cleaning products.

    • Dust or gently vacuum the rush seat using a soft brush attachment.

    • Avoid soaking the rush or allowing water to sit on the seat.

    • Keep away from direct sources of heat, which can dry out natural rush.

    • As a natural material, the rush will mellow in colour and develop character with age.

  • Each piece is made to order, please allow 8-12 weeks for production.
