BURGHLEY HOUSE
STAMFORD, LINCOLNSHIRE
On the edge of Stamford, Burghley stands as one of England’s great Elizabethan houses - historic, lived-in and quietly forward-looking. Built by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, it has remained in the Cecil family for more than four centuries, evolving with each generation while holding fast to its sense of place.
The Burghley estate stretches over hundreds of acres of Capability Brown parkland, shaped for beauty and perspective. Inside, art and craftsmanship trace the tastes of generations. Outside, gardens shift with the seasons and families fill the adventure playground. Each September, the park takes on a different rhythm as the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials return — an event that draws the world’s best riders and thousands of spectators to this quiet corner of Lincolnshire.

THE HOUSE
Burghley’s grand façade opens into a series of rooms that chart 450 years of taste and influence. From Antonio Verrio’s painted ceilings to portraits by Gainsborough and Van Dyck, every space tells part of the Cecil story. The house remains both home and heritage, open to visitors for tours and exhibitions that reveal the craft, collection and character behind its walls.

THE GARDENS & PARKLAND
Beyond the house, Capability Brown’s parkland gives Burghley its sense of scale and stillness. Wide lawns, mirrored lakes and woodland walks frame formal gardens where sculpture and planting evolve through the seasons. The Garden of Surprises and Sculpture Garden invite slower wandering, while the surrounding park remains open year-round for walking, picnicking and perspective.

Designed for discovery, it’s a place where children can climb, explore and invent their own adventures while parents pause with a coffee.
